Windsor Police Chief Todd Lane said Cpl. Frank Ratzlaff WINDSOR - A Martin County and Officer Jessie Mizelle man attempted to flee a traf- were conducting a check- fic checkpoint, but didn’t point on U.S. 13, and the former saw a malt beverage open in the console of the vehicle. Cpl. Ratzlaff asked the driv er to step out of the vehicle and began to check him for weapons. During the search, the suspect attempted to flee on foot, but was tracked down by the two officers. Once the suspect was in custody, officers found a 9 mm handgun and two bags of marijuana on him. The suspect - John Grif- Wait and LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - The Bertie County Board of Edu cation discussed the future of Heritage Colle giate Leadership Acad emy and the effects its troubles may have on the school district dur ing last week’s regularly scheduled meeting. / According to Bertie County Schools Finance Officer Lisa Nowlin, the current enrollment num ber for Heritage Colle giate Leadership Acad emy is 90 students. “HCLA filed a board appeal. Currently other charter schools may bid to take over the school. If no one takes over the charter, then the school is set to close on June 30,” said Nowlin. “If another charter school from a differ ent district takes over the school, could it be moved outside of the county?” asked Bertie County Board of Educa tion Member Norman Cherry. “The charter is not location specific. The Windsor Fire Depart ment hosted its 26th Annual Tee and Sea event last Thurs day and Friday at the Cashie Country Club. The event began at 1 p.m. Thursday with the Duffers Golf Tournament. Windsor Police Chief Todd Lane said officers were called to the res taurant on U.S. 13/17 twice on successive days. On May 11, Wind sor Police Officer Jes sie Mizelle reported to Abrams at 6:30 p.m. “A supervisor at the restaurant had re viewed a video showing an employee removing money from the cash register, and placing it in her pocket,” Chief Lane said. Officer Mizelle and the Abrams supervisor interviewed the em ployee and were able to recover $279 from the employee’s back pock et, according to police. “While the employee was removing money from her pocket. Offi cer Mizelle observed a plastic bag containing pills in the employee’s hand,” Chief Lane said. “The plastic bag con tained 27 oxycodone See EMPLDYEES, A5 Bertie County launces new poverty commission LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Bertie County launched a new poverty commission initiative with the help of community lead ers and the public. In this edition — According to the North De partment of Commerce, Ber tie County is ranked as the fourth most economically distressed in North Carolina in 2018. This is up one from last year’s ranking. An economic snapshot of Bertie, provided by the NC Justice Center, displays that about 35 percent of children within the county live in poverty. This is higher than the state child poverty rate of 21.7 percent. The Bertie County commu nity is seeking to change the statistics.
